Volunteer Opportunities

The positions described below are available to persons wishing to participate in the Newhouse program as volunteers. Volunteer training is provided. If you are interested, please call Jennifer 816-474-6446 ext. 224 or fill-out the volunteer application and mail to:

SHELTER ADVOCATE

(Positions available for Evenings and Weekends)

Assist with resident intakes and exits
Answer Newhouse or Metrowide hotline
Distribute needed supplies to residents
Serve as a role model for residents by offering support and understanding

Skills necessary: trustworthy, the ability to listen and empathize, nonjudgmental and able to handle various job tasks simultaneously.

CHILDREN'S ADVOCATE

(Schedule varies)

Assist with art and play time
Assist with self-esteem building activities
Teach nonviolent conflict resolution

Skills necessary: a love of children, an awareness of their interests, and patience for distressed behavior.

COURT ADVOCATE

(8:00 am to 12:00 noon M-F)

Act as a liaison between witnesses and the city prosecutor in KCMO municipal court
Provide information to witnesses regarding available resources, safety options, domestic violence education and shelter services (any time)

Skills necessary: good communication and listening skills, nonjudgmental attitude, trustworthy, able to work with court personnel.

SPEAKERS BUREAU

(Mostly evenings, some weekends and daytime)

Represent Newhouse while educating the public about domestic violence, Newhouse programs and the services available
Promote the right to live in a violence-free environment
Give speeches to civic groups, churches, businesses

Skills necessary: good communications skills, personable, prompt, enjoy speaking in front of groups.

YOUTH MENTOR

Read to children and/or help with homework
Be a positive role model

Skills necessary: willing to work with children, patient, dependable, friendly, understanding and strong communication skills.

SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEES

Assist in the planning and implementation of the various Newhouse events and fundraisers.

Skills necessary: Dependable, available for monthly meetings, willingness to work hard, and strong communication and planning skills. Must enjoy working in team environments.
