How To Help

There are many ways that you can help out the Newhouse Shelter.

  • YOU can join us help break the cycle of domestic violence by donating. Your donations help us provide safe and secure shelter and services for families of abuse.
  • We offer multiple opportunities for you to be involved through volunteering. Be a special part of people's lives that need your help.
  • Join our mailing list to stay in touch and up to date with Newhouse as we provide a safe place for families affected by domestic violence.
  • Attend or particpate in one of our many exiciting upcoming events. We especially need volunteers for our upcoming Icing on the Cake sugar art exhibition and live cake challenge. The event will be all day on Sunday, April 17, at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel. All of the proceeds benefit the shelter. Help us run this fun event smoothly! Contact Melissa to volunteer: CommunityRelations@NewhouseShelter.org or (816) 474-6446, Ext. 225.
  • Get your friends, family, or organization involved in the fight against domestic violence. There are many ways your group can help our cause.

Newhouse strictly adheres to the Donor Bill of Rights and will always protect our donor's private information.

Monthly Pledge

Donating to Newhouse can be as simple as designating one amount to come from your checking, savings, or money market or we can charge your credit card (VISA, MasterCard & American Express) once a month. It takes a one time effort on your part and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that every month you help another woman and her children find a life free from violence.

Newhouse is an approved 501(c)3 not-for-profit Missouri corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, which establishes policy.

Cell Phone Collection

How many old cell phones do you have in your junk drawer? Let Newhouse staff take those old phones off your hands. Newhouse works with Shelter Alliance to recycle cell phones you no longer need or want. Some phones are then refurbished and reprogrammed with 911 for domestic violence victims, others are sold for parts.

Newhouse receives $.50 to $35 for each phone collected. Your donation really helps! To date, Newhouse has raised more than $28,000 in cell phone donations.

If you'd like to donate your cell phone or place a cell phone collection box at your office, church or facility, please call 816-474-6446, ext. 231.

Honor your business, church, sorority, fraternity, organization, a person or commemorate a special event with a personalized engraved brick. Through this fundraising campaign sponsored by the Newhouse Ethnic Enrichment Committee you have a unique opportunity to show your support of Newhouse and its efforts to stop domestic violence within your community.

Planned Giving

As friends and supporters of Newhouse, your charitable Planned Gift (estate gift) has the following benefits:

  • Maximizing your estate tax benefits and decreasing your liabilities;
  • Support the financial future of the shelter;
  • Create a lasting legacy of support during your lifetime and after you are gone; and
  • Provide income to you from your gifts while you are living.

Planned Giving often requires the assistance of trained professionals in law, financial planning, insurance and banking. If you do not currently have a trained professional, Newhouse maintains a network of professionals who can offer you assistance.

For more information about Planned Giving at Newhouse or if your group would like a speaker on Planned Giving, contact the Vice President of Development at 816-474-6446 x230.
