Volunteering

We rely on the time, talent, and treasures of all of our volunteers. Without the dedication and giving nature of people like you, we would not be able to provide the services and safe haven for the women and children who find themselves at Newhouse.

The positions described below are available to persons wishing to participate in the Newhouse program as volunteers. Volunteer training is provided. Volunteer Opportunities:

Newhouse House Party 2009

Contribute to a good cause while enjoying an evening of dinner, silent and live auctions, live Beatles music and entertainment. We need 40+ volunteers throughout the day to help with:

  • Event set-up & clean up, 9am- 4:30pm, 9pm-11pm
  • Silent & Live Auction Set-up, 9:30am-4:30 pm
  • Silent & Live Auction Assistance (monitor auction items, assist guests) 6:00- 10:00pm
  • Registration (guest check-in & out) 4:30pm- 11pm

We will greatly appreciate as many hours as you can contribute. If you, your friends and family, or members of your organization are interested in volunteering at this worthy event, please email Newhouse Developement Coordinator, 816-474-6446 x226.

Shelter Advocate

(24 hours)
Skills: Trustworthy, ability to listen and empathize, nonjudgmental and multi-tasking

  • Perform residential intakes and exits
  • Answer Hotline
  • Distribute needed supplies to residents
  • Serve as a role model for residents

Children's Advocate

(10 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
Skills: A love for children, an awareness of their interests and patience for distressed behavior

  • Assist with art and play time
  • Assist in self-esteem building activities
  • Teach nonviolent conflict resolution

Youth Mentor

(Evenings and Weekends)
Skills: Willing to work with children, patient, dependable, friendly, understanding and strong communication skills

  • Read to children and/or help with homework
  • Be a positive role model

Other Special Events

(as needed)
Skills: Organized, multi-tasking and good communication

  • Event Registration

Newhouse Holiday Store

Shelter residents (women and children) select gifts for each other from donated items; volunteers help the children select gifts for their mothers and help wrap all of their gifts. Newhouse welcomes donations of wrapping supplies and unwrapped gifs for mothers and children of all ages.

Friday, December 18 – 10:00am: Holiday Store Set-up. Volunteers will help organize and arrange donated gifts for mothers and children.

Monday December 21 – 10:00am: Holiday Store Shopping Day. Volunteers will help mothers and children pick out and wrap gifts for each other.
