Volunteering
We rely on the time, talents, and treasures of all of our volunteers. Without
the dedication and giving nature of people like you, we would not be able
to provide the services and safe haven for the women and children who find
themselves at Newhouse.
The positions described below are available
to persons wishing to participate in the Newhouse program as volunteers.
Volunteer training is provided. If you are interested, please call the
Event Coordinator 816-474-6446 ext. 224 or fill-out the volunteer
application and mail to:

SHELTER
ADVOCATE (24 hours) Skills: Trustworthy, ability to listen and empathize, nonjudgmental and multi-tasking
- Perform residential intakes and exits
- Answer Hotline
- Distribute needed supplies to residents
- Serve as a role model for residents
CHILDREN'S ADVOCATE (10 a.m. to
4 p.m.) Skills: A love for children, an awareness of their interests and patience for distressed behavior
- Assist with art and play time
- Assist in self-esteem building activities
- Teach nonviolent conflict resolution
YOUTH MENTOR (Evenings and Weekends)
Skills: Willing to work with children, patient, dependable, friendly, understanding and strong communication
skills
- Read to children and/or help with homework
- Be a positive role model
COURT ADVOCATE (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Skills: good communication and
listening skills, nonjudgmental attitude, trustworthy, able to work
with court personnel.
- Act as a
liaison between witnesses and the city prosecutor in KCMO municipal
court
- Provide information to witnesses regarding available
resources, safety options, domestic violence education and
shelter services
SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEES (as needed)
Skills: Organized, multi-tasking and good communication
- Event Registration
- Set-up/Clean-up
- Other Duties (Auction, Greeter, etc)
