At age 32, Denise dreamed of traveling the world. She was abused for five years. She and her three children moved out of the violent home and in with her mother. There for the first time she shared the awful truth about the brutality that she endured and concealed under loose clothing. The battering began in private, away from the children. He promised to change, and Denise returned. But so did the violence. He began stalking her on the job and during visits to relatives. On September 21, 1977, when the oldest children were away, he stabbed her seven times while the youngest child watched.
